Hack4Equality, a hackathon by Grindr, in partnership with HackerNest

This is the kind of thing that brings people of all types together, rallying around taking a stance and fighting for a socially beneficial, much needed set of moral issues. Introducing Hack4Equality, an online and in person hackathon to combat LGBTQ inequalities out of sunny Los Angeles, the home and headquarters of Grindr.

This seven-week hackathon is based in Los Angeles, but we’re also inviting the world to participate. Let’s work together to spark change for millions around the world. We expect some brilliant minds to craft technology-based solutions to critical issues affecting the global LGBTQ community across these 4 challenge sets:

Transgender Visibility and Economic Empowerment

LGBTQ Homelessness

Access to Sexual Health Services and PrEP

International LGBTQ Issues

Things kick off on Saturday, August 6, 2016 and end with a grand finale demo day on September 25, 2016. Here’s what will happen for this sprint hackathon:

7 week sprint

3 Workshops

1 final demo day

This format will be a little different from what you’re used to with other hackathons. This sprint-style hackathon takes the pressure cooker model and distributes it over a number of weeks so that participants can hone their project and apply their craft in a manner that breeds higher quality projects that end up on final demo day.

Here’s the full list of events:

Sat, Aug 6, 2-5pm: “Voices from the Field” Info Panel + Team Matching
West Hollywood City Council Chambers, 625 N San Vicente Blvd

Hack4Equality kicks off with a panel of expert mentors sharing their wisdom and experience so participants get a thorough understanding of the challenge sets. These mentors are also judging which teams make it to the finals, so it is in participants’ best interests to get to know them! This will be followed by a team matching exercise for participants and casual socializing. Fun!

Sat, Aug 27, 2-5pm: Technology Mentoring Workshop
Grindr Headquarters, 750 N San Vicente Blvd, Red Building East

Tech experts from Grindr and Esri will be supporting participants with invaluable insights and best practices around their technologies and data sets.

Sat, Sep 10, 2-5pm: “Pitch Perfect” Demo Skills Workshop
West Hollywood City Council Chambers, 625 N San Vicente Blvd

Hackathon participants tend to be clever and accomplished; this workshop helps ensure their demos effectively communicate that. Too often, brilliant ideas and projects are held back by less-than-stellar pitching. Invaluable advice and coaching from investors, public relations experts, and marketers will help participants shine.

Sun, Sep 25, 1-7pm: Science Fair Demo Day + Finals Judging
Grindr Headquarters, 750 N San Vicente Blvd, Red Building East

This is the culmination of a 7-week frenzy of coding, camaraderie, and collaboration condensed into 3-minute bursts of glorious exposition: the Hack4Equality Demo Day. Excited participant teams will showcase their products to the attending public and mentor-judges. They are also encouraged to walk around and watch other teams demo—the sense of grandeur from experiencing a room filled with a few hundred people gathered around a common, socially beneficial cause is palpable and inspiring. Groups of wandering mentors and stakeholders will select the handful of top teams from the Hack4Equality Demo Day to demo for our panel of distinguished finals judges who will decide their fates that evening!
